RV Explorer Leads Expedition to Create 3D Model of U-869

RV Explorer assisted Brett Eldridge on a dive to explore the wreck of the famous U-869 WW II German Submarine, also known as “U-Who”, featured in the book by Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson. Eldridge had been planning this dive for nearly a decade, and one of his primary objectives for the trip was to create a comprehensive 3D model of the historic wreck. Thanks to an introduction from Captain Rustin Cassway, Eldridge was able to align his trip with an ongoing research project of the site being done by military historian Aaron S. Hamilton. The resulting photogrammetry model, the first model of its kind of U-869, is aiding his team’s research. RV Explorer transported a crew of 12 divers over 90 miles offshore for an all-day expedition to the site.
